Stapleton (surname)
Stapleton is an English and Irish surname dating back to the times of Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It is a habitation name; examples of habitations are found in Cumbria, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Leicestershire, Shropshire, Somerset and Yorkshire, and is from the Old English word ''stapol'' meaning post and ''ton'' meaning settlement.
The Stapleton family was dispossessed from England in the Irish Rebellion of 1641.
